What is your current job and how long have you been doing it?

I am Communications and Events Coordinator for Guernsey Chamber of Commerce. I joined the Chamber office team in June 2014 and work with Barry Cash, Director and Anne Richardson, Accounts and Business Development Manager.

I play a key role in developing Chamber’s overall communication activity, including website content, social media management, newsletters, event organisation and assisting with membership administration.

What does a typical day at the office look like for you?

There isn’t really a typical day as each day and week are so different, but if it is the third Monday of the month I would be busy with the Chamber lunch and council meeting. I would get into the office around 8.30am, check my emails to see if anyone was wanting to book or cancel last minute for the lunch and liaise with the hotel regarding final numbers and any dietary requirements. I would also post an event reminder on our social media platforms, then at about 11am I would head up to the hotel with our banners to help set the room up and check the speaker has everything they need. At around 12pm I would start registering guests as they start to arrive. I would then post an update on our social media platforms during the presentation. At 2pm when the lunch finishes I would help clear up and then head back to the office to check in all the guests on Eventbrite and register any further payments. The afternoon would be spent catching up with emails again but also checking my colleague Anne had everything prepared for the Chamber council meeting in the evening. I would finish work around 4pm which allows me enough time to pop home for an early dinner and then return to town for the start of the council meeting at 6pm. If my colleague Anne is away I would take the minutes throughout too. This finishes at 7.30pm, after which I would return home to see my husband and relax!

If you weren’t doing your current job what would you like to do?

My mother always says I should have been a teacher. I used to hold pretend lessons when I was a child and mark workbooks. I think it would have suited me as it would have allowed me to help nurture other people plus I can be assertive and quite patient when training people. However if we are talking dream jobs I wanted to be an actress or a presenter when I was younger. I even auditioned to be a BBC Presenter in UK after leaving University.

What was your first job?

My first permanent job was as a Secretary at Abacus Financial Services. It was a fun company to work for and I was a member on the Sports & Social Committee. I met my now husband working there so I am very pleased I took the job. My life could be quite different now if I hadn’t. Secretarial work in the finance industry just wasn’t what I dreamed of doing when I left University though, so I left the company to start a career in recruitment using my communication skills.

What is your role/involvement with YBG?

I recently joined as a member through working at Guernsey Chamber of Commerce. In my previous job as Client Liaison Manager at thebestof Guernsey, I managed the social media content for YBG for a while, so attended several events during this time. I am already enjoying being involved again.

What is your favourite thing to do in Guernsey?

Walking around the north coastline with my husband spending time taking in everything and seeing all that nature can offer. We have a favourite spot near Bordeaux which overlooks Herm and it is just so peaceful and beautiful. I also enjoy attending various local events but especially music related events.

Which three people would you have at your dinner table and why?

If we could have guests who are dead or alive:

  1. Judi Dench – Firstly she is an amazing actress but secondly I think she would be a great laugh.
  2. Stevie Wonder – He seems a lovely person and I have always wanted to see him live so would make sure he played a few songs to us after dinner whilst we sang along.
  3. Jacqueline Bromley – My husband’s mother. I met her several times but only knew her for about 10 months as she had cancer and died. It would be lovely to sit down with her and really get to know her.
